Karan Johar spills the beans on Zoya Akhtar’s: Karan Johar mentioned that Zoya Akhtar got some advice to tweak her film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. They suggested making it more ‘to the point’ by cutting out some road-trip scenes and adding a catchy song.
In a long post on Instagram, Karan Johar praised Zoya Akhtar after seeing the trailer for her new film, The Archies. He talked about ‘nepotism and privilege,’ saying Zoya had to wait seven years to make her first film and faced more rejections than a fancy restaurant’s empty tables.
Talking about Zoya’s journey in Bollywood, Johar shared that she was told to carefully edit her 2011 film, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, by removing driving scenes from a road-trip story and adding an item song. Shifting to The Archies, Karan applauded Zoya for choosing to make a film she believed in, instead of going for a star-studded cast.
Captioning the post, Karan Johar reminisced, “Zoya and I grew up together—she, the wise one, still is! Seven years of waiting for her first film (forgetting about nepotism and privilege), facing more rejections than a fancy restaurant’s empty tables. But with passion, she made Luck By Chance, a critically acclaimed film that didn’t do well at the box office.”

Talking more about Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Johar added, “She directed my favorite ZO Akhtar film, ZNMD, sticking to her vision (even though she was told to edit it tightly, remove driving scenes in a ‘road trip’ film, and add an item song). She followed her own voice, making a hit, award-winning film. Everyone has a journey, and Zoya has had hers!”
Continuing his thoughts, Karan highlighted, “After the big success of Gully Boy, the world was at her feet, but she chose to go back to her childhood memories of her favorite comic book! She could have made a film with big stars, but she made what she believed in! Zo!”
He concluded, “The trailer is reflective of everything you stand for, which is your paramount conviction! The 7 kids are blessed to work under your priceless guidance! So excited for you Zoya and the exciting ensemble of talent! Welcome to the movies!!!!
